  • The Great Cousin Switch.4

I always like coming into Show Low.

    It's the meadows...

    The trees...

The way they tower alongside the road...
It reminds me ever so much of British Columbia.
    ((sigh))

    In Show Low,
one of our landmarks is the Circle K
    at which we always
    stop.
From the parking lot, we have a great view of this
    "gingerbread house"
as the girls have called it.

    Also,
the wood carving of a bear is a fond favorite.

Coming out with treats for the road!

    Treats to be shared!

    Or fought over...

    ...or dived after...

    Gigglebox...

...striving mightily with her patience in this truck full of boisterous boys...

    Ok, that's it!!

I'm takin' that bag of chips no matter what you say!

Another landmark is when we come up over this hill
and glimpse for the first time,
    off in the hazy distance,
(shout it out with me, people --)
    "The -----
    FLO-WER POW-ER TOW-ER!!!"
(Don't ask me why we call it the Flower Power Tower.  It started too long ago...
    probably just because it rhymes,
    and also,
we find the notion of the great big power plant painted with 1970's hippie-style psychedelic floral designs to be rather amusing...)

    Ahhhhhhh....
    home at last.

Now the fun can really begin.

  • The Great Cousin Switch.3

Moving right along on our northward journey,
the vistas beyond the canyon were
    truly epic:

One of our many landmarks on this route to the ranch.
Whenever we pass a landmark, we have to shout it out.
    "Cibecuuuuuuue!"
There are about 15-20 landmarks on the way...
and we always shout them out.
    Always.

    Vista.
    By God.

And then, about a half hour outside of Show Low,
we came to a screeching halt:

Sat there for a few minutes,
watched several cars in front of us pull a U-turn and head back where we'd all come from,
puzzled ourselves mightily over how a person could get where this road goes
    any other way
    than by keeping on forward...

Finally Paul got out to hike forward a ways and see what he could see.

Meanwhile, the dogs were doing nutso because we were stopped,
so Lisa got out with Sissy...

Lisa thought she saw something meaningful up ahead...

Paul got back from his hike with not much news,
the rest of the kids and dogs piled out,
and the driver of the car up ahead got out to chat.

    The boy joining the fray.

    Looking at....

    Oh!  A clue!
A firetruck... the fact that it was coming from behind us,
rather than from Show Low (up ahead)
was a possible indicator of the
    severity of this accident.

    Continuing to bide the time...

    Checking his watch... meanwhile,
the kids and dogs enjoying the adventure of it all
and the chance to stretch and run.

Chatting with someone up ahead and telling them that no,
he did not get far enough ahead to see what
    was going on.

    Finally on the move again,
we could glimpse the fire trucks way up ahead and around the bend of the mountain.

    Inching forward...

    Inching forward...

    Oh my!
That's a lot of emergency personnel...

    As we got closer,
I grew wary of the possibility of
    seeing something too gruesome.

    Oh boy, there it is...

    A car-b-que!
    That car is well done.
We did not see any paramedics or any injured people,
    thanks be to God.

    So,
that was an unexpected adventure on our journey!
And when all was said and done,
it only cost us about 20 minutes.
It always seems longer at the time though!

  • The Great Cousin Switch.2

One of my favorite parts of the drive to the ranch is
    Salt River Canyon.
Ever since we have been driving this route,
which would be about 6 years now,
I have been begging my honey
    to stop at the scenic
    overlooks
    so I
    can
take some really grand pictures of this amazing place!
    So far, he has refused
    on the grounds that
"We have to get to the ranch!"
    Therefore,
you are going to experience the drive
    through my side window,
    complete with tippy angles and
    guard rails.
    Enjoy!

    The Gap
is the signal that we're done with the canyon.
I will just note here for the record
(and you can all be my witnesses)
that Paul has promised to make all the stops my heart desires on our July 4th trip and let me have my photographic fun.
    Woohoo!!

  • The Great Cousin Switch.1

    This past weekend,
the East Valley and West Valley Heidmanns
    held the first
    (possibly more than annual)
    Great Cousin Switch.
The plan was to have all the girls spend the weekend with Jon and Jess in Superior,
    doing girlish things,
while all the boys came to the ranch with Paul, Nettie, and Jacob.
Into the mix, Lisa came over on Thursday morning
    for some family time,
and ended up staying overnight and coming along with us on Friday to the ranch.

Here are scenes from the road:

    Yay for Lisa coming along!

Notice all the Heidmann kids studiously looking down... you know what they're doing.
    What they're ALWAYS doing...
    (Paul predicted,
    accurately,
that the ride would become much more boisterous after taking on the boys.)

    Windy hair....

    Sisters!

This is Paul, on a mission.
    GET TO THE RANCH!!

Three girls lighter and two boys heavier,
    we are on our way.

Woohoo, the dogs have more room!

    Uh-oh... the goofy has begun...

    The road ahead...

    Rocky walls...

    Curving road with interesting clouds...

    Be prepared to stop!

Paul wickedly decided it was very important to let each of the boys get
a 64 oz. drink for the road.
    (?????)

Yeah.  It's as big as he is.
    Let the potty-stops begin...

    Oooh, construction!

    Pretty vista.

    Great clouds.

Pretty vista AND great clouds... I'm lovin' this trip so far...

Oh, hey-looky!  Heavy machinery... always fun for the boys.

Looks like some black-topping up ahead.

  • The Range

Whether up north at the Heidmann Hideaway, or down in South Phoenix, my girls are at home on the range.
Here are a few pics from last Saturday at
    Phoenix Rod & Gun.

  • A Sunday Hike and an Unwelcome Surprise

    Sunday morning,
after a delicious breakfast of crispy bacon and
farm fresh eggs from Ron and Sherri,
we headed over to Kat's place
(she has about 160 acres a couple of miles from us)
to see the earthships she and Jonathan
    (her ranch hand)
    have been building.
I was so busy touring the place I forgot my camera in the van.
Next trip I am determined to go back and bring my camera with me,
because what they are doing is super cool.

We didn't stay too long since Kat (who works nights as a nurse) had to go to bed.
We invited Jonathan to come along with us on our morning hike,
and he was happy to do so,
as he usually spends several days at a time out on the ranch with nobody to talk to
    and no transportation into town.
We enjoyed his company as we trekked through the canyon
(same one we visited last trip).

The sage bushes were much greener this time!

Geneva at the top of the cliff there...

Paul and I were walking along through the bottom of the canyon, but were met by an impassable trench filled with salt cedars, so the only solution was to go up.

Jacob, at this point, was feeling weary and dizzy
and would have preferred to lie down
    under a juniper
    and die.
We do not allow that sort of thing.
We told him to toughen up and climb!
Unsurprisingly, he made it to the top.

And from the top, we could see this glorious vista at the further end of the canyon.
I wanted to go to there.
    However,

This boy was not likely to go another step
in the "away from the van" direction.

So we sat atop the mountain and waited for the girls
    (who had hiked on ahead)
    and Jonathan
(who had gone to fetch them)
    to climb up.

Then I made them all sit on this rock
    just so
    and say
    "Spacey"
    while I took a picture.

This was among the rocks that were found while hiking.

At this junction there was a parting of the ways.
    I took Jacob and Geneva
and we hiked back to the van via the ridge,
angling down to the canyon floor just before it reached the road.
There we sat with the windows open and drank what was left of
the beverages we had bought on the way out of town.

Paul, Jonathan, and the older girls,
took the camera and hiked a bit further, and took the following pics.

Right in the center of this pic you can see the van.

    ~*~*~*~*~

And then we had a jolly drive back to the ranch,
all hot and sweaty as we were,
and looking ever so forward to the sandwiches and
sodas we would have back at the cabin.

As we drove through the tunnel under the railroad track,
we met up with Dale and his wife,
who are building a lovely home up on the hill near the railroad,
and introduced ourselves and chatted a bit.
Before they left us as they were heading into town,
Dale noted that our back driver's side tire was looking mighty low...
    and sure enough,
it was letting air fast through a slice from something we hit on the gravel road.
Thankfully, we had a pit crew on board!

    Meanwhile,
    the kids kept themselves entertained...

    And for some reason
    (perhaps being Memorial weekend)
there was a remarkable lot of traffic
    coming through this tunnel.

I kept having to herd the kids out of the way for cars and jeeps and minivans!

Then they would go right back into the cool shade to sit

and write in their journals in strange and wonderful alphabets
    known only to themselves.

    ~*~*~*~*~

The tire was changed in roughly 10 minutes and we were good to go.
We enjoyed a most welcome luncheon at the cabin
and spent a lovely afternoon and
    and an evening bar-b-que

    with Jonathan
    as well as
    Kristen and her younger kids.
    Good times with good friends!
